The original Tetris for the NES spawned many wannabe puzzle games that just couldn't compete. Tetris is probably the best puzzle game ever made. No other puzzle game was capable of giving me those freaky nightmares where I was in an empty swimming pool and blocks started falling on top of me. No other puzzle game has managed to make me see everything in tiny pixelated blocks. I'm glad to see Tetris on the N64. It looks and sounds better than ever, and the programmmers even added a couple of new features to freshen it up.
Among the new features are special blocks that you can form using four Tetris pieces (this is a lot harder than it sounds). Form a block and clear it to get bonus lines. The computer records all of the lines you get in every play session, and when you get enough lines, you open up a Wonder. Wonders don't really do anything except give you a nice cinema scene and open up new backgrounds and music. But the Wonders do add a little depth to an otherwise linear puzzle game. They sort of give you a goal to shoot for other than the #1 spot on the high score list.
Multi-player mode is a lot of fun, but has that unfortunate drawback of shrinking your playing area. The smaller spaces will take some getting used to, especially in 3 or 4-player mode. But that's a pretty minor issue for such a great puzzle game. As for the nightmares, you're on your own in that department.
